"James Camerons Avatar The Game-RELOADED"

Avatar merupakan salah satu Film yang meraih kesuksesan akhir tahun lalu, dengan mengambil setting bertemakan Alien yang berada di Planet Pandora, film ini berhasil memperlihatkan fantasi yang cukup memukau. Hal tersebut yang coba dibawa oleh pihak Ubisoft Montreal dalam Avatar: The Game. Namun apakah game ini akan berhasil mengadaptasi semua hal menarik yang ditawarkan dalam filmnya?
Storyline

Avatar akan mengambil setting waktu sekitar 2 tahun dari event yang terjadi dalam filmnya, dimana sekelompok manusia yang tergabung dalam human-controlled Resources Development Administration atau RDA, yang datang ke Planet Pandora, untuk mengambil sumber daya alam yang ada dalam Planet tersebut. Namun tujuan mereka tersebut dihalangi oleh penduduk asli planet tersebut, yaitu suku Na'vi, yang menganggap kedatangan manusia hanya akan menghancurkan populasi mereka.

Beberapa pihak peneliti yang ingin menghindari peperangan dengan suku Na'vi tersebut mencoba mencipatkan sebuah program yang disebut dengan Avatar, dimana program itu akan menciptakan sebuah mahkluk yang menyerupai suku Na'vi, dan dapat dikendalikan oleh beberapa orang yang dipilih secara khusus. Tujuan utamanya adalah agar para Avatar tersebut dapat berbaur dengan suku Na'vi dan memberikan penjelasan bahwa sebenarnya manusia hanya ingin mengambil sumber daya alam tersebut dengan damai, dan berusaha menghindari peperangan.

Namun beberapa petinggi Milter dari RDA berpandangan lain, salah satunya adalah Commander Falco, yang merupakan kepala keamanan dari RDA. Dia menganggap bahwa suku Na'vi itu bukanlah makhluk hidup yang harus dihargai, dan satu-satunya cara untuk dapat menguasai sumber daya alam di planet tersebut adalah dengan memusnahkan seluruh suku Na'vi yang berada dalam planet Pandora. Dan dia memerintahkan beberapa Avatar untuk mempelajari kelemahan dari suku tersebut agar mempermudah mereka untuk menghancurkannya.

Namun beberapa orang Avatar tersebut menganggap bahwa rencana Commander Falcon tersebut sangat keji, salah satunya adalah Dr. Rene Harper, yang merupakan kepala divisi Avatar dari RDA. Selama ini Dr. Harper telah menjalin hubungan yang baik dengan banyak suku Na'vi, dan selama hidup sebagai Avatar untuk mempelajari kehidupan suku berkulit biru tersebut, dia merasa bahwa suku Na'vi berhak untuk mendapatkan mempertahankan planet mereka. Oleh karenanya Dr. Harper sering memberikan informasi rahasia kepada Tan Jala, salah seorang kepala suku Na'vi.

Dalam game ini, kita akan memerankan salah seorang prajurit dari Bumi, bernama Able Ryder, yang terpilih untuk datang ke planet Pandora agar mengikuti program Avatar. Able sendiri memiliki keahlian dalam memperbaiki serta mencari signal. Ketika pertama kali tiba di planet Pandora, kita akan bertemu dengan Kendra Midori, seorang wanita yang akan bertugas untuk memberi pengarahan pada kita tentang apa saja yang harus kita lakukan dalam planet ini.

Tidak lama setelah kita tiba di planet Pandora tersebut, Commander Falco akan menyuruh kita untuk mencari tahu siapakah yang sebenarnya telah memberikan informasi rahasia RDA kepada suku Na'vi. Setelah mengetahui bahwa sebenarnya Dr. Harper yang selama ini memberikan rahasia tersebut, Commander Falco menyuruh kita untuk segera menghabisinya. Disinilah kita harus memilih, apakah kita akan mematuhi perintah atasan kita, ataukah kita akan berpihak kepada Dr. Haper dan suku Na'vi dengan menghianati RDA.

Storyline dalam Avatar: The Game ini sebenarnya cukup menarik, namun sayang dikisahkan dengan sangat buruk. Tidak ada penjelasan yang detail mengenai hal-hal yang cukup penting, seperti bagaimana Able Ryder terpilih untuk mengikuti program Avatar, atau bagaimana detail hubungan Dr. Harper dengan suku Na'vi, bahkan setelah kita memilih kubu mana yang akan kita pilih, storyline dalam game ini terasa semakin linear, dan sepertinya kita hanya akan ditawarkan misi-misi tanpa diberi penjelasan lebih lanjut.

Buruknya cara mengisahkan storyline dalam game ini tidak terlepas dari cutscene - cutscene yang terasa kurang didramatisir, baik kita memilih untuk berpihak kepada suku Na'vi maupun kepada RDA, adegan-adegan serta dialog yang ada dalam cutscene tersebut kurang membuat kita dapat merasakan sulitnya Able Ryder untuk memilih kubu mana yang akan dia bela. Hampir semua cutscene yang ada dari awal hingga akhir permainan hanya terkait mengenai misi-misi yang harus kita lakukan.

Sebenarnya pihak Ubisoft Montreal telah diberi kebebasan untuk mengembangkan storyline dalam Avatar, dan ide mereka untuk membuat Avatar: The Game ini sebagai prekuel filmnya cukup menarik, namun sepertinya mereka gagal untuk dapat mengembangkan storyline dalam game ini untuk paling tidak menjadi sama menariknya dengan film Avatar.
